So I don’t know how many of you are familiar with The Story of Stuff but it is an incredible video that talks about just what exactly all of our Stuff is doing to the planet and how we need to make a change. If you haven’t yet watched the video make sure you do!
It was The Story of Stuff that really got me interested in using sustainable materials and learning more about many of the sustainable projects out there.
One in particular, The Uniform Project was sent to me by one of my best friends and I found it so inspiring that I just had to share it! The Uniform Project was started in May 2009 by Sheena Matheiken. As an exercise in sustainable fashion, Sheena pledged to wear 1 dress for 1 whole year. She took 7 identical dresses, one for each day of the week and reinvented the dress each day with layers and accessories, all of which are vintage, hand-made, or hand-me-down.
Sheena also used The Uniform Project as a year-long fundraiser for the Akanksha Foundation, to fund the education of children living in Indian slums.
Now, one year later, The Uniform Project has exploded. Girls around the world have grabbed hold of Sheena’s idea and are now choosing to wear her LBD for their own 365 days of experimental fashion! How awesome is that??
